Music Director – Community Choir (South Cumbria)

Cartmel Choral Society are a welcoming amateur non-auditioning choir performing a varied repertoire covering classical and sacred works. The choir was started in 1908 and our membership includes both experienced singers and those who learn by ear. We pride ourselves on being inclusive while striving for high musical standards. We are privileged to perform in the lovely historic Cartmel Priory in south Cumbria.

Following the retirement of our previous Music Director, we are seeking a new person for this post, ideally from September 2026, who can take the choir forward. We are looking for someone who can maintain and develop the choir’s musical standards and work confidently with mixed-ability singers. They need to be able to lead engaging and well-structured weekly rehearsals, teach repertoire clearly and efficiently and plan and conduct the twice-yearly concerts. It is important to the choir that their leader is encouraging; blending humour with firmness and matching ambition with ability. It is also important to establish a good rapport with the choir’s accompanist.

Rehearsals take place in Cartmel Village Hall on a Monday evening (currently). There are two concerts per year in Cartmel Priory, Christmas and Easter.

A negotiable renumeration package is offered structured around fees for each rehearsal and each concert.

Applications: please send CV and a brief statement outlining your experience against the key skills we are looking for to:
